The Lord is near.

In your presence, Holy God, we confess that we need repentance. We have broken your commands against idolatry. We do not live in peace with your creation or your people. We have not trusted your word, and we are afraid. Forgive us, restore us, and turn our shame into praise, for the sake of the One who proclaims the good news and for the sake of all the world. Amen.

Come, O come, Emmanuel! Come and set us free! Free us from the heavy chains of our sin and our sadness and body of pain. Free us, O Emmanuel, from the sorrow and suffering of where we dwell. Lord, we are calling, how long do we wait before the glory of the kingdom we can celebrate? Lord, we are calling, will you answer, please? Hear the cries of the people calling, Lord, hear Your people calling, “Free us from the heavy chains of our sin and our sadness and body of pain. Come, Emmanuel, break the bars tear them down from humanity’s cell.” Your light shall break as the morning. Your health shall surely spring up. For when you call the Lord of all, He will say, “Here am I.” We are calling, Lord, we are calling: “Free us.”

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH (In Unison)

We believe in God, creator and lover of the earth, origin and destiny of us all.

We believe in Jesus the Christ—God coming to us in the fragile promise of a baby yet unborn— who emerges as the herald of hope, God's laughter in the face of despair. Plunged into death and hell, he broke free the captives, and is leading the way to the land of promise where justice and peace will flourish.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, who implants the seed of truth, brings us to birth as the body of Christ, and empowers us to confront and transform all that is corrupt, degrading and deceitful.

We believe in the coming reign of God. Announced by the Baptist, it has drawn near to us in Jesus, and will be consummated in the glorious marriage of earth and heaven, when all who have passed through the world's deep sorrow will be raised from the waters, robed in righteousness, and gathered into the joyous fulfillment of God's desire.

For the coming of that day on this day, we work and pray: Come, Lord Jesus, Come!

*HYMN 86 (Vs. 1, 4, 5)      The People Who Walked in Darkness                            ISAIAH 9

The people who walked in darkness awaken to see a great light.

The people who dwelt in the land of the shadow rise to a star shining bright.

Refrain: His name is Wonderful, Counselor, Almighty God, Father forever, Prince of Peace. His name is Wonderful, Counselor, Almighty God, Father forever, Prince of Peace.

For us now a child is given, for all the despised and forlorn.

The rule of compassion shall rest on his shoulder. God’s own Messiah is born! Refrain

How vast is our God’s dominion! How far truth and mercy extend.

The zeal of the Lord will accomplish its purpose: justice shall reign without end. Refrain

THE LORD’S PRAYER (In Unison)

Our Father, in heaven, hallowed be your name.  Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.  Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.  For yours is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever.  Amen.

*DOXOLOGY 144 (Vs. 4)              In the Bleak Midwinter                                    CRANHAM

  What can I give him, poor as I am? If I were a shepherd, I would bring a lamb;

  If I were a wise man, I would do my part; yet what I can I give him: give my heart.

*PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING

*HYMN 360 (Vs. 1, 3)                        Christ Is Coming!                     UNSER HERRSCHER

Christ is coming! Let creation from its groans and labor cease;
let the glorious proclamation hope restore and faith increase:

Christ is coming! Christ is coming! Come, O blessed Prince of peace.

With that blessed hope before us, flutes are tuned and harps are strung;
let the mighty advent chorus onward roll from tongue to tongue:

Christ is coming! Christ is coming! Let each heart repeat the song.
